Construction Worker Falls From Throgs Neck Bridge

Posted in Construction Accidents | Work Injuires on March 30, 2012

A construction worker fell while working on the Throgs Neck bridge early this morning.  The Coast Guard was alerted at 8:05 a.m.  Rescue crews were searching the area for the man who has been identified as John Massas of New Jersey.  Massas was an employee of Nuco Painting Corporation, a sub-contractor hired by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.  He was working on a platform about 130 feet above the water near the middle of the bridge when he fell.  It is unknown if Massas was wearing a safety harness which is required for this type of job.  Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigators are looking into the accident.  The rescue operation has now become a recovery operation.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that 1,000 plus employees at construction sites will undergo a work related death. The majority of construction site injuries and fatalities are preventable if people adhere to safety standards and work site protocols.  It is reports that 1/3 of fatalities or 300 deaths per year result from falls alone.  The responsibility for ensuring safety procedures are in place and compliance with OSHA regulations falls on the shoulders of company management and the job site supervisor. Safety procedures MUST be enforced by site supervisors to help prevent serious work site accidents.
