Safety Mindedness Helps Reduce Pedestrian Accidents in NYC
According to research and data compiled from NYC Police accident reports in 2012, 11,621 pedestrians were hurt in collisions with motor vehicles. This number does not include the number of pedestrians hurt by poorly maintained sidewalks or stairways, or pedestrians hurt by falling objects.
Because of the outcry and demand for safer streets for pedestrian traffic, in 2010, the New York state government put a plan into action that would involve:
Re-engineer and upgrade 60 miles of streets for greater pedestrian safety
Re-engineer and upgrade 20 intersections for pedestrian safety on major two-way streets.
Launch a pilot program to test the safety performance of neighborhood 20 mph zones.
Implement pilot program to improve visibility at left turns along Manhattan streets.
While this plan may take more than the projected year to complete, many New York pedestrians are breathing a sigh of relief. Due to an increase in motor vehicles along NY streets, the government and civil authorities are stepping up to provide safer walkways and crosswalks for the people who choose to stroll rather than drive. Fortunately, progress is underway to help make the streets safer for pedestrians by cutting down on the amount of traffic accidents involving pedestrians struck by vehicles. Unfortunately, there are still property owners, businesses, and city officials who do little to nothing to protect pedestrians from crumbling walkways, open storm drains or manholes, or slippery stairways. City Officials like Commissioner Kelly are looking for ways to improve the safety of New York pedestrians through a combined effort of education and law enforcement who risk being injured by inconsiderate motorists and neglectful bicyclists.”
