New York City — Twelve-year-old Dashane Santana was killed Friday as she crossed Delancey Street near Clinton Street with a group of friends. After school, about 2:40 p.m., a 2006 Toyota minivan struck her as she crossed the street’s nine lanes of traffic.
The driver was a 58-year-old man who was driving east on Delancey Street. The young girl was rushed to New York Downtown Hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival. Dashane was a student at Castle Middle School. She participated in dance, played the flute and the piano. People who live and work in the area say that it is unsafe to cross Delancey Street. A person only has 22 seconds to cross nine lanes of traffic which is concerning for most children and the elderly.
There have been multiple accidents in the past few years. A cyclist was killed at Delancey and Chrystie streets last August, and a 51-year-old woman was killed by a garbage truck at Delancey and Essex streets last May. In 2010, a man was killed by a car while crossing Delancey Street at Essex Street, and a 74-year-old cyclist was killed by a bus on Delancey Street near Ludlow Street.
Concerned citizens of NYC are asking The Department of Transportation to take action in addressing this issue and do whatever it takes to help prevent pedesrtian accidents like these by making this street corner safe for everyone who crosses it.
